There are many indications that by the Mature Indus period urban society had evolved considerable social stratification and division. The varied and often highly specialized crafts alone indicate this, and some scholars have seen in the variations of house sizes and the localization of blocks and barrack-like dwellings further evidence of class divisions, perhaps even amounting to slavery. Whether we should speak of class divisions, or rather of something akin to the later caste system, is also worthy of consideration. In addition to craft specialists and artisans there must have been an agricultural population, whether living wholly in villages or also in part living in the 'cities'. There must also have been a ruling group who have generally been supposed to have combined the roles of administrators and priests. Further, there is growing evidence of the extent and variety of trade. First, there are the 'granaries' or warehouses at Harappa, Mohenjo-daro and Lothal, implying great concentrations of wealth. Next, there is the evidence of unprecedented trade in goods produced within the Indus culture region, such as stone, metal, shell, etc. Thirdly, there is the evidence of very widespread trade with distant parts, both in the form of exports to Mesopotamia and of the trading 'colony' at Shortughai, in northern Afghanistan, and in the form of other exotic imports. As we have seen, this aspect was already extremely old, and contacts with Central Asia for such purposes already went back several thousand years, to the pre-ceramic Neolithic of the western borderlands. In the new context of the Indus civilization it was evidently more sophisticated and more highly organized than ever before. This is shown by the presence of regulated weights and measures, and of a script which was evidently used for trading purposes, as were the elaborate and well-made seals.
