Traditionally Neolithic cultures are identified with ground stone axes in South Asia, though they are not at all necessary to begin farming. In fact, this presumed association of ground stone axes with the Neolithic is so strong that the evidence for domestication of plants and animals has been neglected. As a result, we know very little about early farming in Rajasthan and much of peninsular India.
The evidence from the Ganga valley and the Kaimur hills is also a bit confusing. To us it appears that rice cultivation could have come to South Asia much earlier than agriculture based on wheat and barley. This is because Koldihwa has given c. 7000BP dates for the levels, which have yielded rice husk on clay. Mahagara and Chopani Mando have also yielded similar evidence though there is considerable controversy both about chronology and proof of domestication. We would not be surprised if rice domestication goes back to early Holocene period in the Ganga valley.
Wild rice grows in abundance in that area and could have been collected by these early people. However, some recent work from south-western China seems to make an early beginning of rice cultivation in the Ganga valley a distinct possibility. The recent dates of rice domestication and ceramic technology go back to 15,000 BP. It has been shown by linguists that early rice technology travelled with Mon-Khmer speaking people. It seems that rice technology reached South-east Asia and the Brahmaputra valley with these people. There is some evidence of migration from the Brahmaputra valley to the Central Himalayas through Himalayan corridors. It is interesting to note that the Kumauni dialect has a strong residue of Mon-Khmer words. Of all the crops that are grown in Kumaun only rice agriculture is associated with a lot of rituals indicating its antiquity. It is quite probable that the Ganga valley received rice technology, and later on copper and iron technology, through the Central Himalayas.
