I. Interpret the following passages in about 50 words each: (10X2=20)
1. Drunk with the joy of singing
I forget myself and call thee friend who art my lord.
2. Quickly she set on her own light curls
Her mother's fillet with fringes of pearls;
Quickly she turned with a child's caprice
And pressed on the mirror a swift, glad kiss.
3. The mighty perish in their might
The slain survive the slayer
4. The new poets still quoted
the old poets, but no one spoke
in verse
of the pregnant woman
drowned, with perhaps twins in her,
5. Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
6. O sea,
You generous cow,
You and I are big flops.
We are too sentimental
For our own
Good.
7. Some kind of a dream of unity has occupied the mind of India since the dawn of
civilization. That unity was not conceived as something imposed from outside, a
standardization of externals or even of beliefs.
8. The contrast between our intellectual power and our immoral deeds has depressed
thinking and sensitive people all over the world.
9. I do not idealise the conception of the masses and, as far as possible, I try to avoid
thinking of them as a theoretical abstraction. The people of India are very real to
me in their great variety and, in spite of their vast numbers, I try to think of them
as individuals rather than as vague groups.
10. Both pictures would be correct, for India stretches from the tropics right up to the
temperate regions, from near the equator to the cold heart of Asia.
