There was one other person, young in comparison with those belonging to the orthodox leadership of the Congress, who appeared on the scene. His name was Jayaprakash Narayan. Jayaprakash had a fascinating background. He was a peasant's son who was reared in a little village in the province of Bihar and who saw a tramcar for the first time in his life at the age of nineteen. Later, in search of learning, he went to America. There he lived for eight years and studied five different universities. In order to live while he studied, he worked long hours on the farms of California. He gathered fruit, sorted baskets and packed fruit boxes.

While in America, he had also worked as a mechanic in a shop and as a waiter in a smallan town restaurant. When the day's work was over, he read socialist literature and studied mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics and sociology.

There are travellers and tourists. Tourists see the sights and miss the country. Travellers see the country and the sights too.

Travellers are received with hospitality because they came with a special interest, tourists with formality because they came only with curiosity.

Do you like gardens? Passionate gardeners in every city in the world will take you to see their gardens. Enroute you will see the temples, palaces and other interesting things. But if you go out only to see the sights, you will miss the gardens and the delightful people who live in them.

Don't be a tourist. Throwaway your guide book and move according to your interest. Whether your passion is architecture or orchids child welfare or rock garden, fishing or folk-dancing, butterflies or bridge, you will find people with similar interests everywhere.
