Question Paper

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below it

Economic growth has raised living standards worldwide and has lifted billions out of poverty. However, rising wealth and a growing population have placed unprecedented stress on the Earth's resources. Ecological degradation and climate change threaten the very future of planet Earth. Ecological changes are not a new phenomenon. Different regions of the Earth have always been subject to natural forces like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, etc. Humans have also always cut trees, hunted animals, mined ores, smelted copper, generated wastes, and polluted air. But, what was different in the twentieth century was that the use of natural resources accelerated tremendously. This has caused unprecedented deterioration in the ecological system. It seems that we humans have impacted our planet more deeply in the twentieth century than we did in all the previous centuries put together. It is this that makes the twentieth century so peculiar. These consequences were man-made, but were also largely unintentional.

It was around 1970 that awareness of the ecological challenges facing humankind emerged. People began to talk about the problems that the degradation of the ecosystem posed and realised that economic growth resulting in such degradation was unsustainable. The problem was seen as a global issue that would require coordinated efforts across national boundaries. This led to the beginning of environmental movements that aimed broadly at limiting the despoliation of the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere and at the sustainable use of all natural resources renewable and non-renewable. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, it was realised that calamities like the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004, the Hurricane Katrina that wrought havoc on the New Orleans coast in the United States in August 2005, the recurrent and widespread floods in China, and the desertification in Central Mrica were not really natural calamities, they were perhaps man-made and that the issue of environmental degradation and sustainable growth would have to be taken upon a war-footing.
