the old poets, but no one spoke
in verse
of the pregnant woman
drowned, with perhaps twins in her,
kicking at blank walls

That language is a tree, loses colour under another sky.
When, finally, we reached the place,
We hardly knew why we were there.
Depressed and weary we march back to the lines
A leader says over the evening wireless,
"We are marching forward."
This is the kind of sadness which closes the eyes.
Here the memory for faces of the dead never appears.
I have no joys which are not yours, no
Aches which are not yours.
I too call myself I.
And Flora gave the lotus, "rose red" dyed,
And "lily-white," queenliest flower that blows.
