B. Tech VII Semester Supplementary Examinations, May 2018
(Regulations: VCE-R14)
DESIGN AND DRAWING OF HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES
(Civil Engineering)
Date: 14 May, 2018 AN Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 75
Answer ONE question from each Unit
Unit I
1. Design and provide a detailed drawing of a surplus weir of tank for the following information:
Combined area of group of tanks 20km2
Area of catchments intercepted by upper tanks 15.8km2
Full tank level +8.00m above MSL
Maximum water level +8.75m above MSL
General ground level at proposed site of work +7.00m above MSL
Downstream of the surplus weir, ground level is +6.00m at a distance 6m
Top width of tank bund 2m at level +12.50 with 2:1 side slopes on either side
Tank bunds are designed for a saturation gradient of 4:1 with 1m clear cover
Provision can be made to make Kutcha regulating arrangement to store water up to MWL in
case of necessity.
45M
2. Design a canal drop of 2m with the following data:
Hydraulic particulars of canal Upstream Downstream
Full supply discharge 4m3/s 4m3/s
Bed width 6m 6m
Bed level +15.00 +13.00
Full supply depth 1.5m 1.5m
Full supply level +16.50 +14.50
Top width of bank 2m 2m
Top level of bank +17.50 +15.50
Half supply depth on upstream side is 1m.
Ground level at site of work is +15.50
Good soil is available for foundations at +13.50
Also draw a neat sketch indicating all the salient dimensions.

Unit II
3. Design a sloping glacis weir for the following hydraulic particulars:
Particulars Upstream side Downstream side
Full supply discharge 7.5cumecs 7.5cumecs
Bed width 6m 6m
Bed level +18.00 +16.00
Full supply depth 1.5m 1.5m
Top level of bank +20.50 +18.50
Hard soil is available for foundation below +16.00.

4. Design a under tunnel to suit the following hydraulic data:
Canal:
Discharge 15m3/s
Bed width 15m
Bed level +25.00
Full supply level +27.00
Ultimate bed level +24.75
Ultimate Full supply level +27.50
Velocity of flow in canal 0.49m/s
Average bed level of drain +23.00
Left bank top width 5m
Right bank top width 2m
Top of canal bank +28.50
Drain:
Catchment area 3.4km2
Estimated maximum flood discharge 34m3/s
Maximum flood level of drain at site +24.00
Soil is hard gravel below +22.00
