i. Coefficient of adhesion
ii. Adhesive weight
6M
An electric train accelerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 48kmph in 24 seconds. It
then coasts for 69 seconds against a constant resistance of 58N per tonne and is braked
to rest at 3.3kmphps in 11 seconds. Calculate:
i. Acceleration
ii. Coasting retardation
iii. The schedule speed, if the station stops are of 20 seconds duration
Allow 10% of rotational inertia.
9M
Cont…2

10. Explain the mechanics of the train movement. 7M
An electric train weighing 200tonnes has 8 motors geared to driving wheels, each wheel is
90cm diameter. Determine the torque developed by each motor to accelerate the train to
a speed of 48kmph in 30 seconds up a gradient of 1 in 200. The tractive resistance is of 50
Newtons per tonne, the rotational inertia is 10% of the train weight, the gear ratio is 4 to
1 and gearing efficiency is 80%.
