Andaman and Nicobar islands are a group of 349 islands. Only 38 of these islsnds are
pennanently inhabited. Though the southcm·mosl point of the Indian Peninsula is
Kanyakumari. the southem·most point of land in the territory of the Republic of India is
Indira point in Great Nicobar island. The capital of the union territory that comprises this
island chain is Port Blair.

The indigenous inhabitants of these islands were various Andamanese tribal communities
such as the Greater Andamancse. the Jarawa, the Onge. the Scntinelese, etc. During the
colonial period, the British used the islands as an isolated prison. Many prominent leaders of
India's freedom struggle were lodged in the Cellular Jail in Port Blair. Today, Cellular Jail is
a historic monument visited by a large number oftourists who travel by air or by sea to reach
the islands. In the earlier days. visitors had to rely solely on the sea route.

In 2004, the Andaman and Nieobar Islands suffered massive damage fiom a 10 metre high
tsunami following an Indian Ocean earthquake. Close to 6000 people were killed during the
disaster. While newer senlers ofthe islands suffered the greatest (.asualties from the tsunami.
most of the aboriginal people survived because oral traditions passed down from generations
ago warned them to evacuate from large waves that follow large earthquakes.
