Q.2
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it
07
In the pre-Independence days, India has many dreamers; many capable women and men thinking of a strong and modern India. Many of them took the initiative in various fields, political, social, economic, industrial, educational, literary, scientific, engineering and the religious. They enriched India by their actions, and reflected different facets of our independence struggle. Independent India was enriched by this inheritance. Added to this was the fact that India had richer natural resources as compared to many other countries. These perceptions led to the passionate call for building a great nation. After independence, India made simultaneous progress in many fields: agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, science and technology, among others. Her vibrant democracy was a wonder to the world, which thought India would be plunged into chaos after the British left. About two decades after independence, despite our numerous achievements, doubts emerged about our ability to handle our system on our own. Many of our vital socioeconomic and even military sectors began to have a greater dependence on foreign sources for innovation or technology. Self-reliance and commitment to science and technology were the declared policies, but often crucial economic and industrial decisions were based on technology imports or licensed production, both in the private and public sectors.

Q.3
Paraphrase the following poem
07
My father travels on the late evening train Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light Suburbs slide past his unseeing eyes His shirt and pants are soggy and his black raincoat Stained with mud and his bag stuffed with books Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age Fade homeward through the humid monsoon night. Now I can see him getting off the train Like a word dropped from a long sentence. He hurries across the length of the grey platform, Crosses the railways line, enters the lane, His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward. Home again, I see him drinking weak tea, Eating a stale chapatti, reading a book.

He goes into the toiler to contemplate Man's estrangement from a man-made world. Coming out he trembles at the sink, The cold water running over his brown hands, A few droplets cling to the graying hairs on his wrists. His sullen children have often refused to share Jokes and secrets with him. He will now go to sleep Listening to the static on the radio, dreaming Of his ancestors and grandchildren, thinking Of nomads entering a subcontinent through a narrow pass. -Dilip Chitre
