Question Paper

What are the factors to be considered in selecting the site for a big thermal power plant? Explain them.

What are the proximate and ultimate analyses of coal How is the quality of coal ascertained from these analyses

What are the accessories used in a boiler? Explain the working of main types of air preheaters employed in a steam power plant.

A simple Rankine cycle uses steam as the working medium and operates between 50 kPa and 2000 kPa. Determine the quality of steam as it leaves the turbine and the thermal efficiency of the cycle.

What are the different types of steam nozzles Explain the critical pressure ratio and show that P2/ P1

where notations have their usual meaning.

What are the different types of condensers used in a power plant Explain the working of a surface condenser.

What do you mean by the term vacuum efficiency of a condenser? On what factors does it depend Explain.

What is the function of a cooling tower in a power plant Describe the working of an induced draft cooling tower.

What are the different methods of compounding of impulse turbine Explain them.

Steam with absolute velocity of 300 m/s is supplied through a nozzle to a single stage impulse turbine. The nozzle angle is 25°. The mean diameter of the blade rotor is 1 metre and it has a speed of 2000 rpm. Find suitable blade angles for zero axial thrust. If the blade velocity coefficient is 0.9 and the steam flow rate is 10 calculate the power developed.

Differentiate between a simple impulse turbine and a reaction turbine.

Derive the condition for maximum diagram efficiency of an impulse turbine.

Explain the working of a hydroelectric power plant with the help of a neat sketch.

Explain the working, advantages and disadvantages of diesel power plants.

How are the nuclear reactors classified Discuss the working of a Boiling water reactor with the help of a neat sketch.

Discuss the various factors which must be considered while selecting a site for a nuclear power plant. What are the methods of nuclear waste disposal
