Question Paper
1. Explain in detail the effect of power factor on the wattmeter readings in case of power measurement of a 3-phase load by two-wattmeter method for all possible values of power factor.
2. Three identical impedances of 12 L30° ohms In delta connection and three identical impedances of 5 L45° ohms in star connection are on the same three-phase 3-wire 173/100 volt system. Find the line current and total power.
3. The efficiency of a 400 kVA single phase transformer is 98·77%, when delivering full load at 0·8 power factor and 99·13% at half load and unity power factor. Calculate the
iron loss, and
the full load copper loss.
4. Derive the emf equation of a transformer and define voltage regulation of a transformer.
5. Explain the construction and working of a 3-phase induction motor with the help of neat sketches.
6. Give the applications of d.c. series, d.c. shunt, 3-phase induction and synchronous motors. Justify their uses with the help of their speed -torque characteristics.
7. Justify the use of chopper and inverters in the control of electric drives. Give their advantages over conventional methods of control of electric drives.
What are the factors affecting the selection of motors for a drive?
What are the different types of loads
9. Why is single phase induction motor not self-starting What are the different ways to make it self-starting Explain anyone method in brief.
10. Write short notes on any two of the following:
Testing of 3-phase induction motors
Characteristics of thyristors
Welding transformers
