1. Explain the principle of operation of the three-phase induction motor. 7

State the effects of increasing rotor resistance on starting torque and maximum torque of a three-phase induction motor. 7

2. What are the functions of a starter in induction motor Explain the construction and working of DOL starter.

In a 6-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor with star-connected rotor, the rotor resistance per phase is 0·3 the reactance at standstill is 1·5 n per phase, and e.m.f. between the slip rings on open circuit is 175 V. Find: 7
Slip at a speed of 950 r.p.m.
Rotor e.m.f. per phase.
Rotor frequency and reactance at a speed of 950 r.p.m.

3. Give reasons for the following: 7

Generally cylindrical rotor construction is used for high speed and salient pole construction for low speed synchronous machines.

The speed of a synchronous generator should be kept constant at synchronous speed.

What is the necessity of parallel operation of alternators State the conditions for parallel operation of alternators. 7

4. Explain the differences between a synchronous motor and an induction motor in detail. 7

Explain the purpose of using damper windings in a synchronous machine. 7

5. Write short notes on any two of the following: 2x3

Crawling and Cogging

V-curves of Synchronous Motor

Synchronous Condenser

Explain the construction, operation and characteristic of split phase induction motor. 7

6. Describe the construction and operation of a shaded pole induction motor. 7

What is a stepper motor Enumerate its advantages and applications. 7

7. Describe the constructional details of linear induction motor. 7

Discus the merits and demerits of servo motors. 7
