Corruption is regarded as a Social evil. Corruption distorts welfare goals, marginalises development process and material progress and brings disaster to the well being of a country. It threatens the value system, culture and destroys civilized life. It poses a serious threat to democracy and to the very way of life.

Corruption is not a new issue to Indian society and the world. It has its own history. The history of corruption is deep rooted. We can find it in the laws of Manu, coded as early as 1000 BC. In 200 B.C. and around, Kautilya, the famous writer of Arthashastra suggested bribery (EL08lSi1(l as means of weakening enemy's power. History reveals that bribery and corruption lead to the collapse of a country's functionaries. It has become a major problem confronting developing countries today. While concluding, it can be stated that corruption is a social-economic offence which effects the society and pollutes the social, economic, political and constitutional structure of the nation. Deterrent punishment is the demand of the time.
