Principal Functions:

Under the direct supervision of the Dean, Academic Affairs/Dean, Research and overall direction of the Director, GNLU, the Coordinator shall undertake the following duties and responsibilities in consultation with Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and GNLU;

(i) Initiate, plan, implement and follow-up research activities exclusively in the area of Everyday Ethics in the Legal Profession, in collaboration with national and international stakeholders including law firms, corporate houses, government departments, public sector undertakings, etc., including with respect to the following:

a. ethics for the Legal Profession as would practically apply in everyday situations;

b. philosophical principles underlying ethics;

c. role of lawyers in influencing broader ethical behaviour in the society;

d. institutional and structural ethics;

(ii) Supervise under-graduate / post-graduate / diploma research to contribute to thought leadership and capacity building amongst relevant stakeholders of the country, in the area of Everyday Ethics in the Legal Profession;

(iii) Plan and conduct training and extension activities such as workshops, seminars, round-table conferences etc.;

(iv) Provide input to legislature, executive and judiciary on latest trends and developments in Ethics in the Legal Profession on a regular and upon request basis;

(v) Assist in Ethics in the Legal Profession law and policy related activities of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and GNLU;

(vi) Publish an academic journal and enable contributions to other academic journals on the evolving nature of the practice of ethics in the practice of law;

(vii) Contribute towards ensuring that GNLU achieves knowledge and research excellence world-wide in Ethics in the Legal Profession;

(viii) Report on a quarterly basis to Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and GNLU on programs and activities, indicators of achievement, results obtained under the Chair;

(ix) Engage with the broader community and wider lawyer network to mainstream conversations on Everyday Ethics in public dialogue inter alia by:

a. providing a forum for discussion and study of Everyday Ethics in the Legal Profession;

b. promoting comparative foreign research on issues relating to Everyday Ethics in the Legal Profession;

c. organizing workshops and training seminars for academics, judicial officers, lawyers, government officials and other stakeholders;

d. publishing policy papers, reports and carrying out empirical studies on topical issues of Everyday Ethics in the Legal Profession; and

e. providing high quality legal research and study materials on a pro-bono or sponsorship basis.

(x) Carry out direct and ancillary work related to the Scope of the Chair;

Essentials

(i) A distinguished scholar, researcher or practitioner having more than 5 years of relevant experience, preferably having doctorate in the same or connected subject, who in the view of the Selection Committee has made significant contribution to knowledge of Ethics in the Legal Profession or who could realize the aim and objectives of the Chair;

(ii) Good knowledge of latest national and international research trends and developments in Ethics in the Legal Profession field;

(iii) Ability to conceptualize and organize international training workshops and brainstorming online/on-site discussions apart from teaching/Research; and

(iv) Fluency in English language.

Desirable

(i) Experience in working with international Ethics in Legal Profession policy, research and/ or advocacy agencies, law firms, corporate house, relevant governmental agencies/departments;

(i) International exposure and outlook to Ethics in the Legal Profession;

(ii) Experience of research projects in the field of ethics in the legal profession and /or Research contribution in relevant area.

Important Notes:

a) This appointment is initially for 1 year duration, including probation period of 3 months. Subsequent extension depending upon the performance of the incumbent, requirements of GNLU and renewal of agreement between GNLU & Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, with respect to the Chair.

b) GNLU retains the discretion not to make any appointment to this vacancy, to make an appointment at a lower remuneration, or to make an appointment with a modified job description.

c) Only short listed candidates will be called for interview.

d) Only applications received before the closing date with requisite application fee will be considered.

e) The final decision in respect of appointment shall be taken by the Selection Committee.

f) The Applicant must ensure his / her eligibility for the post in respect of qualifications and other requisite criteria and only then apply.

g) Candidates shall send self-attested copies of certificates and mark-sheets from SSC onwards in support of their qualifications. Originals shall not be sent along with the application but these must be produced at the time of personal interview.

h) Application or CV / Bio-Data sent through e-mail will not be considered under any circumstances.

i) No TA/DA shall be paid for attending/participating in the selection process.

j) Applications incomplete in any respect or those received after the stipulated timeline shall not be entertained.

k) The University reserves the right to alter / insert any corrections / additions in the advertisement / website in the event of any typographical error before the last date prescribed for the receipt of the applications.

Research Grant, Support facilities and other benefits:

a) One-time grant for subscription of relevant books, reports, journals, databases; participation in relevant conferences, workshops; carrying out relevant research project and training in relevant area; and to procure IT equipment, printer, etc.

b) Office space, library facility, necessary furniture and fixture and such other amenities required to carry out excellent research and training programs.

c) The Incumbent can avail one day casual leave per month and sick leave as per the circumstances.

d) A return economic class airfare between the home place and Ahmedabad will be provided upon joining and separation, during the entire duration of stay, subject to at least 1-full year performance of duties.

e) A subsidized boarding and lodging at GNLU may be provided.

f) The incumbent shall be responsible for all other expenses concerning his/her stay at GNLU, such as medical insurance, visa fee, etc.

g) Depending upon the availability of resources, circumstances and needs of GNLU and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, the Selection Committee may recommend or adjust terms and conditions to achieve the aims and objectives of the Chair.

h) The Incumbent shall not be considered, for all legal and practical purposes, an employee or retainer of GNLU or Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. The incumbent appointed under the Chair shall have no claim over duration of appointment or any other benefits or entitlements, due to the fact that another chair who is appointed under another scheme enjoys higher or lower level of honorarium, benefits and entitlements.

Application Procedure

a) Duly filled in application form with the relevant supporting documents shall be sent to The Registrar, Gujarat National Law University, Attalika Avenue, Knowledge Corridor, Koba-Gandhinagar, Gujarat 382426, India.

b) Application fees: 500 for candidates from unreserved category and 300 for candidates from Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Differently-abled (Physically and visually differently-abled) categories. Fees shall be paid either in cash at the University or through Demand Draft drawn in favor of Gujarat National Law University payable at Ahmedabad. No other mode of fees payment shall be accepted. Application form without the requisite application fees shall be summarily rejected. The candidates from reserved categories must attach self-attested copy of certificate of category in support of their claim.
