Advertisement for Two Research Associates (Post-Doctorate)

Posts: 2 Post-Doctoral positions based at the Department of Public Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh, for the project Transforming India's Green Revolution by Research and Empowerment for Sustainable Food Supplies (TIGR2ESS). This is a Global Challenges Research Fund Project of Research Councils UK project, which is a multi-institution research collaboration led by the University of Cambridge (https://tigr2ess.globalfood.cam.ac.uk/). The focus of the work of the 2 positions will be on Impacting Wellbeing in Rural and Urban Communities: Education, Empowerment and Entrepreneurship leading to improved Human Nutrition, Health and Wellbeing.

Duration: Three years or till the completion of the project, whichever is earlier. However, further extension and enhancement of fellowship will be subject to an annual review.

Emoluments: Rs. 38,800 p.m. + 20% HRA (as per UGC norms)

Essential Qualifications: Doctorate degree in Social science/Health/Nutrition/Social Anthropology (candidates with PhD thesis submitted may apply).

Position 1

Job Description:

The successful applicant will work to develop methodologies and tools for data collection on gendered norms around crop and food choices in diverse rural communities, and opportunities for education and skill enhancement, especially for young men and women. The Research Associate will participate in the collection of data, its analysis and writing of reports and papers. She/he will also develop, as a final output, curricula on health and nutrition based on local contextual understandings of agriculture and food consumption. These will be pilot tested with different groups of people at different levels community members, village level child care and health workers, and so on. Based on the pilots, the curricula will be finalised and disseminated amongst relevant stakeholders at state and national level such as the Health Missions, Nutrition Mission and Open Universities. The Research Associate will also document women 'local champions' of well-being and nutrition to create a publicly accessible digital database and exhibition materials.

Qualifications:

The applicant should have research experience in the Social/Health Sciences with a focus on Public Health and/or Education and Literacy along with a specific interest in Nutrition and Health. Some previous experience of independent research would be desirable. The applicant should also have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and know Punjabi/Hindi. It is also desirable that they have experience of presenting and writing-up research results for publication in peer-reviewed outputs, including conferences, journal papers and book chapters as well as policy briefs and reports.

Position 2

Job Description:

The applicant will be working to examine the impact of innovative skill programmes on rural and urban well-being. The Research Associate will conduct field studies at village level of existing asset and skill levels among rural/peri-urban households. She/he will then undertake skill interventions with youth and women at these sites to assess possible routes to improving employment and empowerment. The applicant will also proceed to consult, finalise and disseminate the results to various skill development partners in the public and private sector. The Research Associate will also document women 'local champions' to create a publicly accessible digital database and exhibition materials.

Qualifications:

The applicant should have research experience in the fields of rural development, development studies, or agricultural economics. Knowledge of Indian agriculture and rural development issues is an advantage and experience of conducting surveys and working with agricultural extension services and rural organisations. Some previous experience of independent research, preferably in India would be desirable. The applicant should also have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and know Punjabi/Hindi. It is also desirable that they have experience of presenting and writing up research results for publications in peer-reviewed outputs, including conferences, journal papers and book chapters as well as policy briefs and reports.
