Vacancy Architect/Urban planner in School of Habitat Studies, TISS

The project TURN (Tacit Urban Research Network) located in the School of Habitat Studies aims to create a repository of tacit knowledge towards informing theory. TURN is a multi-institutional research programme with several sub-projects.

Applications are invited for the post of a Architect/Urban planner -who can anchor the documentation of a series of formal, informal and self-constructed settlements across M East ward, Mumbai, and possible other sites. The documentation imagines spatial and cultural narratives as the starting point for a rich inquiry into the nature of built form in the identified settlements. The research will be in coordination with team members from the Transforming M (East) ward project. Details of the project can be found on www.urk.tiss.edu . This participatory research will document and research aspects of housing and basic services in slum neighbourhoods in M ward. The form of documentation will include detailed descriptive visualizations of practices and tactics, which lead to evolution of the built environment. The research involves working in a multidisciplinary team.

The Research Officer will report to Prof Amita Bhide in School of Habitat Studies, TISS. The appointment is contractual for 11 months and extendable based on performance of the candidate. The position will will offer an opportunity for deeply grounded fieldwork and a team research experience.

Activities and Tasks:

The Research offices scope of services would include, but not be limited to, the following:

Jointly operationalise the methodology, undertake data collection and management of the research project in time-bound manner. Primary data collection through photographic and visual data, as well as in-depth interviews with residents in the identified locations; Secondary data collation through satellite and map data, property records, development plans/layouts, master plans, and recorded narratives of identified stakeholders Visualization of the data using a range of techniques including sketches, orthographic and isometric drawings, 3-dimensional models (physical and virtual), and other multimedia Analysis of the data through the above visualizations, and helping build a larger narrative tying up socio-cultural, socioeconomic and developmental trajectories. Contributing to other aspects of the project in M (East) ward

Qualifications and Skills

Master's degree in Architecture/Urban planning/Urban Designing with interest in research

Software skills required for this position include: AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, 3ds Max; GIS MS Office; Model making & sketching

Self-starter with ability to work with minimal supervision Able to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks

Languages:

Fluency in written and spoken English, Hindi and Marathi.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience
