Recruitment of Project Scientist-B for IITM-IIHS Collaborative Project

(TENURE - STRICTLY 1-YEAR)

Walk in Interview on 27th July 2017 at 08.30 am

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is an autonomous research organization fully funded by Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi. It is a premier Institute of national and international repute, devoted to research in various aspects of atmospheric sciences with emphasis on tropical meteorology, particularly on the Climate Change and Indian Monsoon.

The core project for this position is the ASSAR (Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions) project, which is part of CARIAA (Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia), a 5-year IDRC/DFID funded frontier international research program. IIHS leads this project in South Asia, with IITM Pune as an acknowledged partner. As a part of the ongoing knowledge partnership between IIHS and IITM, and within the ASSAR research framework, a scientific project has been finalized: The project will focus on the use of paleoclimate data, retrieved from lakes, to help inform environmental and social impacts of decadal climate variability in and around central Maharashtra. The project, focusing on the last 1000 years, will provide an opportunity to address climate variability and climate impactrelated issues and has a clear goal ofinforming climate adaptation policy.

The aforementioned project broadly responds to the framework of collaboration between the two institutions, particularly in the context of strengthening knowledge under the theme of Climate Predictability and Inter-regional linkages. This project will be jointly coordinated by IIHS (Bangalore) and IITM (Pune). IITM is equipped with state-of-the-art advanced infrastructural facilities like High Performance Computer (HPC) system with 790 TF peak performances, modern library, workshop and other scientific support. Laboratory facilities for past climate research at IITM include a tree-ring laboratory, a stable-isotope mass spectrometer facility and a high resolution milling machine for carbonate samples. The position is temporary and we seek a bright, dynamic and motivated person to contribute to the project.

Description of the ASSAR project and the proposed (paleoclimate focused) study:

The main objective of the ASSAR project is to investigate climate adaptation issues in the semi-arid context. Typically, the project aims to understand barriers or enablers to effective, widespread and sustained climate adaptation. This sub-project, within the broader ASSAR frameworks, aims to reconstruct climate variability and its impact on water resources, the biophysical environmental and society on decadal timescales, over the past 1000 years. The region of interest is central Maharashtra, particularly the Ahmednagar region of Maharashtra and will involve collecting lake cores and measuring several proxy parameters in order to

achieve a high-resolution set of records climate and environmental variability that
characterize the region.

The collaborative study will allow us to understand the source of climate variability and study the impacts of such variability on ecosystems and human societies. The knowledge gained will be critical for informing capacity building and policy decisions in the region. In a meta-framework, this study will consolidate our understanding of the drivers and dynamics of large-scale environmental changes, in addition to re-constructing risk-response framework. As such the proposed work would enable better understanding of the regional dynamics around climate change and help decision-makers to design appropriate region-specific climate adaptation policy.
